Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte Seniors Make Sundresses for Children

Filed under: Senior Housing,Senior Living Guide — seniorlivingguide @ 8:49 am

Charlotte, NC – When Dora Lee Brown heard about the Project Sundress class at The Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte’s Adventures in Learning Program this spring, she could not contain her excitement. “I’ve always been interested in children and this program offered a way for me to use my sewing talents for something good. This is an easy way to bring joy to little girls. The patterns are easy and the pieces go together quickly. What a fun way to express my creativity and help little ones as well.”

The Shepherd’s Center invites you to join us on Monday, May 21 at 12:30 p.m. at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 1117 South Blvd. when 100 children’s dresses will be presented to A Child’s Place. Over the past six weeks, eight women have worked on these dresses during class, which is held each Monday from 1:20-2:20. What they couldn’t finish during class, they took home.

Project Sundress was coordinated by Claudia Moses, a long-time senior student at Adventures in Learning. With the success of this class, Shepherd’s Center Program Director, Nina Arten anticipates that the program will be offered each spring.  “Our theme this spring was Outreach and this was the perfect way for us to give back to the community. The seniors who participate in our Adventures in Learning Program are strong, vital individuals who care about children who are in need.”

The Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte has been serving older adults in the community since 1980. Programs currently offered include Adventures in Learning; computer classes where seniors learn how to use the computer and Travel Adventures where older adults take day trips to areas of interest in the Southeast. Services offered are medical & shopping transportation; handyman service; Income Tax assistance; Medicare Information Assistance in cooperation with SHIIP (Senior Health Insurance Information Program); and informational seminars.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month!

Filed under: Senior Living Guide — seniorlivingguide @ 8:46 am

Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Yet, despite being a leading cause of death and adult disability, fewer than one in five people in the U.S. can recognize a symptom of a stroke.

Stroke strikes FAST and you should, too! Many people don’t know that being able to recognize and respond to stroke symptoms can possibly save lives. Stroke should be treated as an emergency because there is a treatment that can be given within the first three hours after symptoms
start.  Recognizing stroke symptoms can be easy if you remember to think
FAST. Use FAST to remember warning signs:

F= Face          Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A=Arms           Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S= Speech      Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Does the speech sound slurred or strange?

T=Time           f you observe any of these signs, then it’s time to call 9-1-1.
