As your parents become older, help the role of caregiver begins to switch and you, stuff their child, search are in the position to ensure your mom and dad are well taken care of. This responsibility includes helping your parents remain independent in their home for as long as possible. Most parents don’t want to give up their home because of their age and would rather life out their lives under their roof. However, this usually requires some improvements and adjustments to their home. Four simple and inexpensive things you can do to help your parents feel safe in their home are:

Dead Bolt Locks
Install strong dead bolt locks on the front and back doors. A strong dead bolt reduces the chance of criminals kicking the door in. However, make sure your parents are able to easily work the dead bolts since some locks can be a bit tricky and difficult to set.

Regularly test smoke alarms to ensure they are in working order. Smoke alarms are often forgotten about and can go unnoticed for years until you need them to work. An easy way to remember to test them is scheduling a yearly battery replacement and testing on an important date such as your birthday. Also, keep the water heater thermostat to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to help prevent accidental scalding. This simple step not only protects against scalding it will also reduce the amount of energy used which lowers energy costs and makes the home more energy efficient.

Emergency Numbers
Write emergency numbers in easy to read letters and place them near every telephone in the home. Include your cell phone number and any other important telephone numbers that your parents should know. Write neatly in large numbers and keep the paper with these numbers written on it free of doodles. Doodling on the paper can make it difficult for people to find the number they need in an emergency situation.

Purchase a Charleston home security system. These systems help protect your Baby Boomer from burglars as well as alerting the local fire department or ambulance in cases of emergency. A security system helps keep them safe in their home 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
