WHO: Jerry Hart, resident of Heritage Raleigh, a Brookdale Senior Living retirement community in Raleigh, N.C.
WHAT: Hart will fly in a glider plane for the first time to celebrate his 88th birthday
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 15
WHERE: Harnett County Airport, 615 Airport Road in Erwin, N.C.
SUMMARY: Even with 6,500 pilot hours in a powered plane, Hart has always wished to fly in a glider plane one day. To help their father celebrate his 88th birthday and make his wish come true, Hart’s children are giving him the gift of flight.
Hart moved to Heritage Raleigh in 2004 with his late wife, Barbara. He is known for his involvement around the community, especially in his roles as caller for bingo, community photographer, leading exercise, and dancer in Brookdale’s Seniors Know They Can Dance, an intergenerational dance competition.
Before moving to Heritage Raleigh, Hart worked at General Motors in Rochester, N.Y. and served as president at Stackpole Components in Raleigh.
Hart’s children coordinated their father’s birthday flight. On Saturday, Oct. 15, Hart will take a half hour flight in a glider plane through the North Carolina Soaring Association. Two of Hart’s children, John and Judy, will watch from the airport as their father soars through the sky.
