Charlottesville, Virginia: Commonwealth Assisted Living, LLC provides high-quality housing, personal care and comprehensive services that are responsive to the needs and preferences of residents and their families. Over the past 12 years, Commonwealth Assisted Living has grown to become one of the largest providers of assisted living services in the state of Virginia. The company now has 19 communities throughout Virginia, 12 of which also provide Alzheimer’s and memory care through its award-winning Sweet Memories program. With the goal of providing optimum resident care with the most efficient operation possible, they make decisions and have implemented many successful programs resulting in both enhanced resident care and consistent compliance. Hiring a new Vice President of Operations and strengthening their company’s culture are two such examples.

“The way we managed our operations in the past worked well for us,” shares Commonwealth President and CEO, 05222008123424logoRichard J. Brewer. “Having a centrally located corporate office no more than four hours from any of our communities allowed our executive team to be hands on. But with the growth we’ve experienced over the last three years, and the plans we have for the future, we knew it was time to change how we do business.” Part of this change was bringing in Charles Ix to be the new Vice President of Operations for Commonwealth Assisted Living.

Ix has been with Commonwealth Assisted Living since 2010, initially as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and most recently as President of their Stay at Home Personal Care division. Commonwealth’s executive team realized Ix’s performance and depth of company knowledge, coupled with his background of being a professional athlete and coach, gave a unique twist to his leadership style. “As the coach of Western Albemarle Boys Tennis Team, I stressed to my players that while tennis is an individual sport, the results of each player impact the overall success of the team,” shares Ix. “Commonwealth exists in much the same way. We have 19 unique communities who should be managed locally, knowing the decisions they make not only impact their individual success, but roll up to affect the success of the company as a whole.”

Today is a new day for Commonwealth Assisted Living. “We want Commonwealth Assisted Living to be the community of choice for seniors and their families as well as an employer of choice for future employees. We know our short and long-term goals as well as the things we need to do to achieve them, and we believe this culture change is the first step,” shares Brewer. Executive directors are now considered “CEO” of their community. The front line employees are empowered to make decisions and suggestions for improvements where they see due. Company-wide input was received on how everyone could be involved in the culture change, and from that input came a Core Values Statement, outlining the key elements and actions that will attribute to the success, both of the individual communities as well as the entire organization. “The Core Values Statement will serve as a reminder and a check and balance system, ensuring we hire the best people and make the best decisions,” continues Ix.

Commonwealth’s CORE Values, developed in conjunction with its 1,000+ employees, reads: “We CARE about people. We DO the right thing. We are passionate, have fun, and CELEBRATE success. We SPEAK UP! It’s our responsibility. We take OWNERSHIP and ADD value in all we do. We are RESPECTFUL.”

Commonwealth Assisted Living has the people and plans in place to ensure continued success. For more information on Commonwealth Assisted Living please visit the company web site at www.CommonwealthAL.com or call (800) 784-7288.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 23, 2014

The visit from LCDR Shaun Bellemare, USN and Kelly Stirling, Public Affairs Officer, Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, was a trip down memory lane for many of the men attending the recent Men’s Club Breakfast at Lake Prince Woods retirement community.

With a large contingent of World War II and Korean War veterans in the audience, Ms. Stirling gave a brief overview of NAS Oceana.

111The area of Virginia Beach known as Potter’s Farm became Naval Auxiliary Air Station Oceana in 1943. Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress and Dam Neck Annex are also included in Oceana. NAS Oceana’s primary mission is to train and deploy the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet strike fighter squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets. The base is home to the Navy’s F-14 Tomcats and East Coast F/A-18 Hornets. Some 19 squadrons comprised of 227 aircraft call Oceana home base.

LCDR Bellemare detailed his 14 years of Navy service and spent the majority of his presentation answering questions. Since some in the audience were former military pilots, a number of the questions had to do with improvements that have been made in aviation technology since World War II; the next generation of military aircraft was also discussed.

Lake Prince Woods residents will travel to NAS Oceana next month for a tour. They will see the flight line with all the jets lined up, visit the air traffic control tour, and receive updates from some of the pilots.

Lake Prince Woods is a residential retirement community offering an array of lifestyle choices. Located in Suffolk, Virginia, the community is nestled among 172 lovely wooded acres bordering Lake Prince. As a continuing care retirement community, Lake Prince Woods offers residential living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing care. “We are excited to be hosting events that are open to the public and promoting senior fitness and healthy lifestyles,” said Maria Connelly, Kisco’s National Wellness Team Leader.  “They epitomize the Kisco community lifestyle we embrace, The Art of Living Wellsm. Martha Head Wins Poster Competition

NEWTON-Martha Head, Healthcenter Secretary at Lake Prince Woods has been selected as the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) poster contest winner by the parent organization, United Church Homes and Services (UCHS). Head’s poster will be reproduced and shared among nearly 700 UCHS employees and distributed to ten UCHS communities located in North Carolina and Virginia.

Head has been employed at Lake Prince Woods since 2010. Her award winning poster carries the theme of a movie theater marquee with QAPI showings -24/7, 365 days a year.

UCHS sponsored an employee contest to raise awareness for Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) in Poster Contest 21their healthcare centers. QAPI is the merger of two complementary approaches to quality management, Quality Assurance (QA) and Performance Improvement (PI). Both involve seeking and using information, but they differ in key ways. Quality assurance is a process of meeting quality standards and assuring that care reaches an acceptable level; performance improvement is a pro-active and continuous study of processes with the intent to decrease the likelihood of problems by identifying areas of opportunity and testing new approaches. A solid sustained QAPI program creates a fulfillment for caregivers and offers better care and better quality of life for residents.

“An effective Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Program is critical to our goals to improve care,” shared Steve Paterson, Chief Quality andCompliance Officer. “This contest provided a way for employee involvement and to create awareness.”

United Church Homes & Services, a not-for-profit corporation located in Newton, NC, operates three continuing care retirement communities, a PACE (Program for All-inclusive Care for the Elderly), and six affordable senior housing communities across North Carolina and Virginia.
