Getting older often requires adjusting to physical limitations that normally occur as the years pass. Mobility aids and other conveniences are becoming a growing industry as the population ages. A number of devices are on the market that can help the elderly manage their limitations so they can live on their own more effectively.

Simplified Cell Phones

For the elderly, a cell phone can be especially important. A cell phone can bring fast help during automobile breakdowns or sudden medical problems. However, many cell phones are so complex and have so many features, they are too complicated for elderly people. The buttons may be too small to use and the screen features too tiny for those with impaired sight. Fortunately, the marketplace has provided cell phones with larger screens, bigger buttons and simplified operations so that seniors can use them without difficulty.

4 Modern Conveniences Every Elderly Person Should ConsiderStairlifts

Many elderly people who live in two-story homes have difficulty getting up and down the stairs. A stairlift is a device that uses a chair that runs on a rail along the length of the staircase to lift the seated person up and down by electrical power. Stairlifts are available for both curved and straight staircases. Stairlift devices are more affordable than a putting in a full elevator and can be installed without major alteration to the structure.

Walk-In Bathtubs

The walk-in tub is an invention that provides a more convenient and safer access point which then becomes watertight after closing. The U or V-shaped door allows easy entry without stepping over the standard 20-inch tub edge. A number of accessories are available for walk-in tubs, including grab bars, seats, towel holders and other items. Walk-in tubs can make hygiene easier for those with limited leg or back range of motion.

Transfer Devices

Transfer devices are mechanisms that allow seniors to maneuver from one position to another using a bar, trapeze or pole to give them additional leverage. These devices mount to the ceiling, the floor or both to provide a secure leverage point to balance weight when changing position. These transfer devices can be used in bedrooms, living rooms or bathrooms to make movement around the home easier for those with mobility issues.

These innovations can make life easier for elderly people, but they can be costly. For a disability attorney Charlotte residents can call our office to discuss their medical issues and their current needs.
