If you are open to new hobbies that keep your mind and body moving, cheap you can find plenty of competitive activities that fit the bill. Start by making a list of things you’d like to do that you’ve never tried before. Once you start brainstorming, cure the sky’s the limit. Check out these five activities to get your competitive juices flowing:
Join a Swim Team
Senior Swim Teams are popping up everywhere. Sponsored by city recreation centers, private clubs or community colleges, these teams offer training and swimming competitions for seniors. You can keep track of your swimming statistics online. This is a great way to keep in shape through competition!
Many public golf courses offer tournaments for senior players. You can enter most tournaments if you are a certain age with a certain handicap. Check out your state’s golf association for a list of tournaments. If you are a beginner golfer or would like to learn the sport, call a public course to schedule lessons with their pro. Before long, you’ll be entering tournaments with the best of them.
Make Golf Your Fantasy Sport
Fantasy golf can be another fun way to stay competitive. If you’ve ever dreamed of being a part of the professional golfing world, this is probably the closest you’ll get. You get to be the “owner” of a “team” in a fantasy golf league. “Draft” professional golfers like Tiger Woods onto your team. Then watch to see how “your golfers” score each week in the PGA or European Tour. Their scores will determine how you fare in the fantasy golfing world.
Accept the Sudoku Challenge
If you like to play Sudoku, you might want to consider taking your number puzzle addiction online. You can find Sudoku games to play for free. Challenge yourself just to keep your brain fit, or compete in weekly Sudoku challenges to win prizes. If you are new to Sudoku, you can find a website that will teach you how to play this popular, logic-based game.
Dance to Win
Dancing is one of the very best activities for seniors. Besides being a pleasant way to exercise, dancing reduces your stress and your waistline. Recent studies indicate that this fun activity also improves your memory. Brush up on your dancing skills or learn some new steps by joining a dance class. When you’re ready, call your local Chamber of Commerce to find out which organizations in your area sponsor senior dance competitions.

It’s normal for seniors to have a strong desire to remain in their home, malady but their family members may not feel comfortable with them there alone. Seniors who have fallen a few times may have concerns about being alone, and they may have fears about home intruders or other dangers. The good news is that there are several steps you can take to help seniors and their families feel good about them remaining at home.
Monthly checks from retirement accounts or dividends should not be mailed to the home where they are easily intercepted. It’s safer to have these checks deposited directly into the bank or delivered to a secured post office box. It’s also wise to remind seniors that anyone who asks for their Social Security number or other financial information is most likely running a scam. It is safer for them to get the contact information and have a family member call the company back if the call seems to be legitimate.
There are steps you can take to prevent break-ins. Install kick-proof plates along door jambs, make sure all locks are in great condition and put security film on the inside of windows to make them harder to break. Place valuable items out of sight of windows or doors, and install security locks on all doors of the home to deter intruders.
Make sure that a phone is working and within easy reach. Seniors can have trouble getting up from the couch and walking around the home, so it’s wise to have several phones strategically placed around the home. If possible, invest in a small, cordless phone that can be carried in a pocket for the ultimate convenience.

With age, bones’ density and strength naturally begins to decline and can lead to bone loss, ultimately increasing the risk of osteoporosis. After the age of 30, bone loss begins to occur and progress with women more at risk. However, it’s still possible to increase the strength of bones and reverse any symptoms or conditions by incorporating a few habits into a senior’s lifestyle.
1. Consume Calcium
Just the diet alone can drastically increase the bones’ density by incorporating calcium into the diet. Factor in foods that include milk, cheese, yogurt, and spinach. Calcium also increases the density and condition of teeth, allowing seniors to be a candidate for sedative dentistry when it’s needed and prevent the risk of tooth loss and fractures.
Although many people think that exercising can make it easier for bones to break, it will actually benefit the bones in the long run and prevent injuries from occurring. For seniors, exercising three to five days a week through walking or jogging will prevent osteoporosis.
3. Boost Vitamin C Intake
Many seniors try to avoid the sun, but experts say that the vitamin C will actually work to increase bone density by having enough exposure throughout the week. With a bit of gardening or a daily walk in the sunshine, skin will not be the only thing benefiting.
4. Switch to Decaf
Although a delicious cup of coffee is a part of many seniors’ morning rituals, it can be harming seniors and significantly contributing to bone loss. By switching to decaf, the lower amounts of caffeine consumed will delay bone loss from occurring and reverse damage from decades of consuming caffeine.
5. Quit Drinking
For many seniors, alcohol has the same affect on their body and mind as when they were younger, but the risk of harming themselves increases due to a more fragile state they’re in. By consuming more than seven glasses of alcohol a week, it can cause an increase in falls and slips, which will lead to fractures and breaking of bones.
6. Take Supplements
Even with a diet rich in calcium and vitamin c, it can often not be enough to provide the body with enough nutrients. By taking a daily supplement, it will put less pressure on consuming both vitamin c and calcium on a daily basis, and is necessary for those who are lactose intolerant.
