Easter Seals Festival of Chefs is one of South Florida’s longest running premiere charity events, best described as an extravaganza  “Where Culinary and Fine Arts Meet.”

The Respite Hosts Day of Nurturing for Family and Professional Caregivers

Charlotte, N.C. –  Charlotte, N.C. based charity, The Respite: A Centre for Grief & Hope, will present Wind Beneath Your Wings, Heart-Centered Support for Family and Professional Caregivers on Friday, November 2, 2012, 8:30am-4:30pm, at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church (2701 Park Road). This workshop will feature 5 top-notch speakers – Author and Former Caregiver, Joyce Sheldon; Licensed Professional Therapist, Mandy Eppley; Gerontologist, Lyndall Hare; SoulCollage Facilitator, Cindy Ballaro and Respite Co-Founder, Elizabeth Berrien. Participants can register on The Respite’s website (www.TheRespite.org). The fee for the day-long event, including lunch, is $45 if registering by Oct. 19 and $55 after that date.

More than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled, or an ageing family member/friend during any given year, and spend an average of 20 hours per week providing care for their loved one. Family caregivers are the foundation of long-term care nationwide exceeding Medicaid long-term care spending in all states. 83% of self-identified family caregivers believe their self-awareness led to increased confidence when talking to healthcare professionals about their loved one’s care. (Source: National Family Caregivers Association, Survey of Self-Identified Family Caregivers, 2001.) For the professional caregiver (doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, etc.), encouraging this self-awareness can result in the entire family having a positive caregiving experience.

“Caregivers are so often overlooked and not thought of as the ones needing the nurturing, after-all they are caring for ill or aging individuals. But in truth, if our caregivers are not nurtured they themselves may become dangerously exhausted. Seeing the need for a day of nurturing and self-awareness for the caregiver themselves led us to create this workshop,” stated Mandy Eppley, Director of Services & Programs at The Respite.

Speakers for this day are:

Joyce Sheldon, national speaker and author of From Fear to Faith, A Caregiver’s Journey, has been endorsed by many Hospice organizations including Hospice International. Her personal experiences as a caregiver of her late husband gave her first-hand knowledge of the different phases, or as she calls it “cities,” the caregiver goes through in their journey. She will speak about these “cities” offering compassion and inspiration.

Mandy Eppley, M.A., LPC, has been in private practice for 20 years and is Co-Founder and Director of Services and Programs at The Respite. She will be presenting from The Model of Heart-Centered Grief, a unique model of moving through the grief process that she and Chris Saade have developed. Ms. Eppley has led numerous workshops and classes, and is an expert in helping individuals transform their grief to find the hidden gifts that are there.

Lyndall Hare, PhD Gerontologist, has worked in the field of aging for twenty-five years, both in Charlotte and South Africa. She serves as the Midlife Transitions & Aging Specialist for The Respite. Dr. Hare’s presentation will introduce caregivers to the concept of heart-centered and compassionate eldercare coaching, which is a partnership and an approach that creatively and respectfully involves family caregivers in choosing the best care scenarios for their loved ones.

Cindy Ballaro, Co-Founder and Director of Awareness & Outreach for the Respite will lead the group in making a SoulCollage® card that will focus on the theme of “nurturing and personal empowerment.” SoulCollage® is a creative, fun, and meaningful process using magazine images to create a collage. Attendees will leave with a card that will provide inspiration for them on a daily basis. Ms. Ballaro has been a SoulCollage® facilitator for 2 ½ years and leads monthly classes at The Respite.

Elizabeth Berrien, Co-Founder and Director of Marketing & Development of The Respite, is also the founder of Soul Widows, an organization that provides support for widows 60 and younger. By the age of 27, Elizabeth had already experienced the loss of a child and life as a widow. Ms. Berrien will speak about her own grief journey and the gifts that have been born from her losses.

In 2011, three women in Charlotte, N.C., Mandy Eppley, Elizabeth Berrien, and Cindy Ballaro, came together using their separate journeys through grief to start The Respite, A Centre for Grief and Hope, a place providing a holistic approach to confronting grief and loss. The Respite, located at 4919 Monroe Road in Charlotte, offers workshops, support groups, therapy, yoga, massage, healing arts and personal and nutritional training for a variety of losses and life transitions. The mission is to help people, regardless of socio-economic status, who have suffered a significant loss in any form to reclaim healthy and productive lives. The philosophy at The Respite encourages individuals to view their grief as a powerful creative force and a rich resource to cultivate.
