Filed under: Uncategorized — seniorlivingguide @ 8:48 am

One out of three senior citizens will fall this year. Falls are the major contributing factor to 40% of all nursing home admissions and cost our nation $19 billion dollars annually.  This doesn’t reflect the emotional, ailment psychological and catastrophic events imposed on elders, hospital their families and caregivers. Statewide the most common cause of emergency room visits and hospitalizations was a specified fall. What’s worse is that about 50% of those senior citizen who experience a fall, will fall again.

Because of these startling statistics, September 22 – 28, 2012 has been recognized as National Falls Prevention Awareness Week.  In recognition, the Metrolina Falls Prevention Coalition has been coordinating and planning two Falls Awareness Expos in the region.  These events will promote fall prevention awareness and inform seniors, families and professionals about this important issue.   The Expos will have educational speakers on such topics as falls prevention, causes of falls, home safety, and medication.  There will be exercise demonstrations on programs such as Tai Chi and a Matter of Balance which help to increase flexibility, strength, and balance.  There will be over 25 exhibitors at each location with resources and health screenings for balance, bone density, blood pressure screenings and more.

Falls Prevention Awareness Expos will be held at

  • Levine Senior Center at 1050 DeVore Lane in Matthews from 10 am to 2 pm on Wednesday September  19, 2012
  • Gaston Senior Center at 1303 Dallas Cherryville Highway in Dallas from 10 am to 2 pm on Wednesday October 17, 2012
