Did you know that every 15 seconds, drugstore an older adult is seen in an Emergency Department for a fall- related injury and every 29 minutes, illness an older adult dies from a fall? Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those aged 65+ costing this country over $28 billion annually. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs. But they’re also largely preventable. This year forty-five states will stand together with 70+ national organizations, professional associations, and federal agencies that comprise the Falls Free© Initiative to participate in 5th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day (FPAD) on Sept. 22. We promote the day to bring attention to effective strategies to reduce the risk of falling. This year’s theme, Standing Together to Prevent Falls, seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls in the older adult population. Everyone can play a role in keeping seniors safe. Start planning your FPAD activities today!
