Goals and objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, health the participants will be able to:
- Recognize problems due to alcohol/drug abuse among Older Adults.
- Understand methods of Screening and Brief Intervention for alcohol/drug abuse among Older Adults.
- Describe different types of treatment for alcohol/drug abuse among Older Adults.
- Practice opportunities to screen for and present a diagnosis of addiction to an Older Adult or caregiver.
Dr. Weaver has lectured to professionals in Virginia about problems with alcohol and
prescription drug abuse in Older Adults. For this presentation, discount he will provide
information to attendees about addiction in Older Adults, and how to effectively
initiate screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) with this
population. Attendees will work together to discuss cases to make a diagnosis of
addiction in an Older Adult and to initiate a brief intervention. A final wrap-up will
help attendees consolidate the new learning about this population.
About the Speaker
Dr. Michael Weaver is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry in the
Division of General Medicine and the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at Virginia
Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia. He
received his M.D. degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
He completed a Residency in Internal Medicine and a Clinical Research Fellowship in
Addiction Medicine at VCU, and he is Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and
Addiction Medicine. He is currently involved in patient care, medical education, and
research. Dr. Weaver is the Medical Director for the VCU Substance Abuse Consult
Service and the Medical Director of the Primary Care Pain Clinic at VCU. He
volunteers as a Medical Director of the Human Resources, Inc. Methadone
Maintenance program in Richmond, which serves central Virginia. He is the
Director for the Addiction Medicine rotation for residents, medical students, and
pharmacy students at VCU.
