Founded in 2002 by a couple who needed help caring for a loved one, tadalafil and didn’t know where to turn give her the quality of care, and the quality of life she deserved, BrightStar began as a family business that was created to provide care that was more – more dependable, more supportive, and more complete. Today BrightStar operates from over 200 locations nationwide, to provide the full continuum of homecare (including adult and elder care), childcare (including newborn care, babysitter and nanny services), and medical staffing services for individuals, families and healthcare facilities. By providing services from companionship, toileting and hygiene assistance, to in-home blood draws, all of which are available around the clock to meet our client’s every need, BrightStar is able to keep parents and grandparents in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes, as well as to assist parents with their childcare needs.
Locally, the Richmond BrightStar office is owned and operated by Mark and Amy Grasser, both of whom came to BrightStar after many years in the corporate world. Amy managed the Human Resource department for a regional bank, where she was responsible for finding the right candidates that would be able and willing to provide the top notch service upon which the bank was founded. In addition to working in the accounting field, Mark, who is a CPA, directed the development of new communities. Among his chief responsibilities was to ensure that customer needs were met and all customers were satisfied.
Managing the company on a daily basis, local owners Mark and Amy, both of whom have grandmothers in their 90’s, have each experienced first-hand the challenges families go through in identifying the best plan for their own individual family to provide care to aging parents and grandparents. They have experienced the difficult situations that are encountered when family members have to deal with such overwhelming challenges; challenges which are only exacerbated when family members are not living close to loved ones.
As with the couple who founded BrightStar almost a decade ago, Mark and Amy knew there had to be a better way. When they discovered BrightStar it became apparent that this was the solution they were in search of. In addition, with BrightStar not only are they able to provide the high level of service to which they have both become accustomed to providing, but also they are at the same time able to make such a positive difference in the lives of so many families.
The entire Richmond team is dedicated to giving families the piece of mind that comes with knowingthat their loved ones are receiving the highest level of care and services. SUMMARY: Meyer spent most of his working life flying to Europe, South Africa and South America, representing his company which was connected to the steel industry. He has flown many times to Spain, Chile, South Africa, England, France, Italy, and more. As a result of his many trips, his two sons grew up in airports watching Meyer come and go. The family developed a deep passion for all things aeronautic. Now this passion is carried on by Meyer’s grandson; a fascination with avionics is a common interest that binds the male members of the family. In fact, two Meyer men have flight simulators/virtual flight capabilities on their computers, and anytime one of the Meyers is traveling by plane, the others keep track of the flight and listen to tower-to-aircraft communications.
“This will be a major family event,” said Meyer. “This will also be a thrill of my lifetime. I have spent thousands of hours watching and admiring the folks on the ground of the runway, and have always wanted to experience the feeling. This would signify the culmination my life of business travels, and very uplifting to my family and me.”

If you’re one of the millions of baby boomers caring for aging parents, you know just how overwhelming it can be. Keep these helpful tips in mind to make it easier on both you and them.
“When you become a parent, you get nine months to prepare,” says gerontological social worker Amy D’Aprix, PhD, founder of The Caregivers’ Coach (CaregiversCoach.com), a company that provides support and services. “When you become a caregiver, you get nine minutes.” A sudden stroke or fall can alter an adult child’s life quickly, so it’s important to have the caregiver conversation when everything is still fine. Use the 40/70 ruleSM, suggests Paul Hogan, coauthor of Stages of Senior Care. When you’re 40 or your parents are 70, talk to them about their preferences. Then have them get these must-have advance directives in order with the help of an attorney: a living will (a legal document that spells out your parent’s medical wishes if he or she is incapacitated) and a health care proxy, also called a durable power of attorney for health care (which allows your parent to appoint someone to make important medical decisions if he or she is unable to do so).
Explore the Options
Figure out what’s best for your parent’s specific situation. Home modification, like installing grab bars in the bathroom, may be a good start. Beyond that, you can hire medical or nonmedical in-home help for a few hours each day.
If your parent needs more assistance, look into your options– everything from assisted living to dementia care. Go to Caregiver.org and TheFamilyCaregiver.org to learn more. A geriatric care manager can help you determine what’s best for your family; visit CareManager.org to find one in your area.
Think Twice About Relocation
You may feel that having your parent live with you is best. But consider a few factors, advises Marion Somers, PhD, author of Elder Care Made Easier. Can you shoulder the responsibility? How deeply involved is your parent in his or her community? “You could be moving your mom from a comfortable environment,” says Dr. Somers, which can take a toll on her health and happiness. Is your family on board? Hold a meeting to discuss their feelings and how having your parent move in might affect them.
Caregiving is costly. Medicare covers your parent for the short term in the event of an acute health crisis, like a heart attack or stroke, but it doesn’t provide for long-term care. And while Medicaid does pay for longterm care, it is solely for low-income seniors. Discuss finances during your initial conversation with your parents and be sure to ask if they’ve purchased long-term care insurance. If they haven’t, perhaps they should.

Ask for Help
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is trying to go it alone. “So many caregivers take on more than they can handle,” says Dr. Somers. And the stress can put your own health at risk. Reach out to family and friends, senior centers and local services that can offer help.
